Seven Louisiana High Schools Rank Making Our State Shine

Seven Louisiana high schools rank among the top 2,000 public high schools in the United States with one Jefferson Parish school landing in the top 100, according to a new ranking published Monday by Newsweek.Newsweek has for years published an annual ranking of high schools. U.S. News & World Report has a rival list, which two weeks ago gave eight Louisiana schools gold and silver medals. Six of those schools made both lists.Newsweek, which in 2010 merged with the Daily Beast website and stopped publishing a print edition in December, looked for schools “that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads.”Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies, in Metairie, earned the rank of 77, the only top 100 school in Louisiana.The other six Louisiana schools and their Newsweek rankings are: Patrick Taylor Science and Technology Academy, Jefferson, 193; Ben Franklin High School, New Orleans, 198; Baton Rouge Magnet High School, Baton Rouge, 339; Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts, Natchitoches, 460; LSU Lab School, Baton Rouge, 522; and Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies, Gretna, 596.Newsweek examined six features of high schools: graduation rate, college acceptance rate; average SAT/ACT scores; as well as the scores, percent of students enrolled and the number of tests per student taken in advanced courses such as Advanced Placement.
